Medical research indicates that a diet rich in vegetables and fruit help to reduce the risk of developing several chronic diseases.

Apples are widely consumed and are a rich source of potent antioxidants.  Studies have linked its consumption with a reduced risk of developing heart disease, diabetes, certain cancers and asthma.

Laboratory evaluation have found apples possess significant antioxidant activity. They stopped cancer cell growth, lower cholesterol and reduce fat oxidation (damage).

Apples contain a variety of powerful antioxidants including quercitin and catechin.

Several studies have specifically linked consuming apples with a reduced risk for cancer, particularly lung cancer.  A study conducted in the Netherlands of over 120,000 people found fruit and vegetable consumption was linked to a 21 per cent reduction of lung cancer in women, but this association was not present in men.   Other studies have made similar observations in women and men, including a Finnish study of over 10,000 women and men followed for over two decades.  There was a strong relationship between low flavonoid intake and lung cancer development.

Working Overtime Can Harm Your Health

A report suggests the phrase “working overtime is killing me” may be as factual as it is figurative. According to a long-term study of more than 10,000 civil servants in London, working overtime is bad for the heart.

The research, published online in the European Heart Journal, found compared with people who did not work overtime, those who worked three or more hours longer than a normal, seven-hour day had a 60 percent higher risk of heart-related problems such as death due to heart disease, nonfatal heart attacks and angina.

Dr. Marianna Virtanen, an epidemiologist at the Finnish Institute of Occupational Health, Helsinki (Finland) and University College London (UK), said: “The association between long hours and coronary heart disease was independent of a range of risk factors that we measured at the start of the study, such as smoking, being overweight, or having high cholesterol.

Probiotics Beneficial Against Infections in Kids.

A study published in the Journal of Clinical Nutrition was conducted to investigate the role of Lactobacillus GG (LGG) in the prevention of gastrointestinal and respiratory tract infections in children who attend day care centers.

The researchers placed a group of 281 children who attended day care in a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial.  They were randomly placed in two groups, one that received LGG at a dose of 109 colony-forming units in 100ml of a fermented milk product, and a placebo that was of the same post-pasteurized fermented milk product without LGG, over the course of three months.

The children in the LGG group experienced a significantly reduced risk of upper respiratory tract infections, a reduced intervention period. Lactobacillus GG (LGG) can decrease the risk of upper respiratory tract infections including rhinitis, pharyngitis (throat infection), sinusitis, otitis (ear infection), and the common cold in children attending day care centres, claims a new study.

The findings were published in the Journal of Clinical Nutrition, also found that the rate of absence from childcare centres due to infections was lower in children receiving LGG in comparison to those who were not.
